It's all about the Journey, not the Destination

Maybe I'm an hopeless romantic, but I really would like to live a late-eighteenth-century journey, traveling with Louis Vuitton trunks, historic and iconic travel luggage, equipped with compartments for evening gowns and hat boxes.

In 1858 Louis Vuitton invented one of the most famous trunks, made with lightweight and durable materials, it was a parallelepiped with a rectangular instead of a rounded base as it was used at that time, so that it could be loaded more easily on ships and trains, as well being stackable.

If I could choose, I would like for instance, the first vertical wardrobe, invented in 1875 and internally organized with drawers and hanger so that I could carry my wardrobe without having to unpack the luggage on my arrival.

Or a wonderful trunk that could contain all my shoes in its drawers, like this wonderful one in the picture.

That is, I would not have to unpack the bags as they used to do once, moving instead with so many trunks for all kinds of clothing and all the plenty of accessories, those aesthetically beautiful trunks, perfectly organized and divided into their spaces.

Already the exhibition 'Volez, Voguez, Voyagez - Louis Vuitton' I had visited at the Grand Palais in Paris, and just opened in New York, had recreated the story and description of the basic models:

the flat floor trunk, the shower trunk, the altar trunk, the trunk bed, the Hemingway's "library" trunk, the one made for the maharaja tea service, the flowers box, beginning with the first wooden trunks to the story Monogram and Damier canvases creation.

And then you meet with Frederic, the expert Ambassador of Trunks and Special Orders, who shows you the book of orders full of his sketches and drawings, and you ask him to tell you in depth what he does.

He listens to the manias, the desires, the obsessions, the needs of those customers who require a special trunk to be able to keep their own collections, their favorite pieces and hobbies accessories. He explores, understands and rationalizes everything in a very detailed design then materialized into a specific trunk, a unique piece with its logic in space, aesthetics and functionality.

A trunk that is part of the travel philosophy but which then actually becomes a collection object and a piece of furniture.

For example, this perfume trunk, a piece for traveling, but also to show.

Or like these smaller sized bags, to enclose personal items, watches, jewelery, porcelain objects.

This is the Louis Vuitton spirit: to interpret customers wishes and fulfill by delivering them already packaged into a personalized trunk, customized in exterior decorations too, chosen according to personal taste and painted by professional artists.

Being able to keep this promise intact since157 years of the Maison birth, and knowing how to make it with the same passion.

The significant thing is all here. From order to delivery, depending on the requirements and size of the ordered trunk, it may take another year, during which you can go to see the various stages of the work and the individual pieces in Asnières-sur-Seine, historical and fascinating Atelier I have visited a couple of times.

The joy and curiosity of waiting. The patience and the pursuit of excellence.

It's all about the journey, not the destination. That's my philosophy.
